As the sun shines brighter over our lively summer community it’s important to pay extra attention to the well-being of our older adults. Older adults are at higher risk for heat-related illnesses, as aging can affect the body’s ability to stay cool, particularly when combined with certain health conditions. Here are some key tips to help older adults stay safe and comfortable during the hot summer months.
1. Stay Hydrated Water is key!
Dehydration is one of the biggest risks for seniors in hot weather. Encourage regular water intake, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Another yummy idea is offering water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges.
2. Dress for the Weather
Lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing helps the body stay cool. Adding a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses also provides valuable sun protection.
3. Limit Sun Exposure
Try to stay indoors during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). If going outside is necessary, choose shaded areas and use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Making sure to reapply every two hours.
4. Keep Your Home Cool
Use fans, air conditioning, or keep blinds closed during the hottest part of the day. If air conditioning isn’t available, take a trip to a public space like the library.
5. Watch for Signs of Heat-Related Illness
Caregivers should monitor for symptoms like dizziness, headache, rapid pulse, nausea, or confusion. These could indicate heat exhaustion or heat stroke, conditions that require immediate attention!
6. Plan Safe Outdoor Activities
Morning or evening walks, light gardening in the shade, or relaxing on a covered porch can be enjoyable and safe when temperatures are on the lower side.
Summer on the shore can be a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors, but it’s crucial to take a few extra precautions when caring for seniors. A little planning goes a long way in keeping our loved ones safe, comfortable, and thriving all summer season long.
