As a caregiver, I’ve seen firsthand how staying active can make a big difference in how we age, not just for those I care for, but for myself too. This September, in honor of Healthy Aging Month, I’ve made it a personal mission to embrace an active lifestyle and encourage others, especially seniors, to do the same.
One of the simplest changes I’ve made is walking more. I aim for 10,000 steps a day, which has become a peaceful daily walk that gives me time to reset, breathe, and connect with my surroundings. For seniors, while 10,000 steps may be a great goal, even 5,000 steps a day can offer major benefits like improved cardiovascular health, better mood, and reduced risk of falls. The key is consistency! Even small amounts of movement do add up.
I’ve also started going to yoga three times a week, and it’s made a big difference in my overall well-being. It has improved my agility and made my body feel more mobile. Yoga has also taught me how to breathe with more awareness, something I hadn’t realized I was missing. Taking deep, intentional breaths has helped lower my stress and even improved my sleep.
Flexibility and balance are critical as we age. They help maintain independence, reduce the chance of injury, and simply make day-to-day life easier. For those who feel traditional yoga might be too much, there are wonderful alternatives like chair yoga and modified classes at our local Estuary Center that focus on safe stretching and movement.
Healthy aging doesn’t mean running marathons. It means finding joyful, sustainable ways to move your body and nourish your mind. Whether it’s walking a few blocks with a neighbor or joining a local yoga/stretching class, movement brings strength.
As someone who is on this journey alongside the people I care for, I’ve learned that healthy aging isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress. Every step counts, every breath matters, and every small effort adds up to a stronger, more joyful life.
This September let’s all take a step towards better health. You’re never too old to start, and you’re never alone on the path.
