As we move further into March, the signs of spring are popping up all around us. It’s the perfect time to open the windows, let the sunshine in, and freshen up our homes. What better time to make sure our living spaces are safe, comfortable, and supportive for the older adults we love?
Falls are one of the most common causes of injury among seniors, but the good news is that many falls are very preventable! Most falls occur in the kitchen and bathrooms. Just a few simple home adjustments can significantly reduce the risk of falls.
Start by clearing clutter, we all have it! Open walkways, tidy up loose papers, and move cords out of high-traffic areas. A clean, open path makes moving around the home easier and safer.
Next, check rugs and flooring. Removing those loose throw rugs or adding a non-slip backing helps prevent unexpected slips. Having smooth surfaces in the house can give everyone more confidence while walking!
Let’s brighten things up! Good lighting is essential. Replace dim bulbs, add nightlights in bedrooms and bathrooms, and be sure stairways are well lit. Adding a little bit of light can go a very long way.
The bathroom deserves special attention, especially for our older loved ones. Installing grab bars, placing non-slip mats in the shower, and adding a shower chair when needed can provide added stability while maintaining independence.
As the weather warms and we get outside for fresh air, don’t forget about outdoor areas. Sweep walkways, clear garden hoses, and check that entryways are uncluttered.
Spring is a season of renewal and creating a safer home environment is a wonderful way to support independence, confidence, and peace of mind. With just a few thoughtful updates, your loved ones can enjoy the sunshine and the season ahead safely and comfortably.
