A Message from Our President & Vice President
We can’t believe how fast the months are flying by! Winter is coming to an end and spring has nearly sprung. The weather is getting warmer; and what perfect timing as members of Old Saybrook Chamber of Commerce prepare for this Saturday’s (3/4) Chili Fest on Main St. in Old Saybrook,12-3pm. For $10, you can sample and decide on your favorite chilis made by participating businesses and organizations. Come hungry! Proceeds go to the C. Wilfred Hunter Scholarship Fund granting scholarships to OSHS seniors for college. Enjoy! Happy Spring, Happy March! ~ Lisa & Megan Gradzewicz

Caregiver of the Month - March 2017: Jackie M.
Last July, our office door opened and in walked an effervescent stranger with a sparkle in her eye and a spring in her step. That day, Jackie M., joined our Golden Horizons family and has since proven herself a valuable member. She is a true professional and caring individual, often going above and beyond in attending to her
client’s requests. Her energetic, friendly personality puts everyone at ease. Thank you, Jackie, for your dedication and hard work. Congratulations!

Important March Dates & an Old Irish Recipe
We have several important dates coming in March 2017:
- Friday, 3/3: National Employee’s Appreciation Day
*To all employees of Golden Horizons, thank you for your continued work and dedication to GH and your clients. We appreciate you!
- Sunday, 3/12: Daylight Savings Time
At 2:00am EST, our clocks will jump FORWARD one hour to 3:00am EST, meaning we will lose one hour of sleep (sad day I know). On the plus side, it will be lighter later!
- Friday, 3/17: This is no blarney, it’s St. Patrick’s Day!
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, colcannon, from the Irish cál ceannan, is a traditional Irish mashed potato dish. Literal translation: white-speckled cabbage. We’ve included a recipe below to help your celebrate!
- Monday, 3/20: Spring Equinox (aka.First Day of Spring)
Another name for the Spring Equinox is Vernal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the Autumnal Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. Source: www.timeanddate.com
Colcannon Recipe
Total Prep: 2 hr | Active Prep: 15 min | Yield: 6 servings
Ingredients: 3 lbs potatoes, scrubbed; 2 sticks butter; 1 1/4 c hot milk; freshly ground black pepper; 1 head cabbage, cored and finely shredded; 1 (1-lb) piece ham or bacon, cooked the day before; 4 scallions, finely chopped; chopped parsley leaves, for garnish

Directions: Steam potatoes in their skins for 30 min. Peel using knife and fork. Chop with knife before mashing. Mash thoroughly to remove all lumps. Add 1 stick butter in pieces. Gradually add hot milk, stirring all the time. Season with a few grinds of black pepper. Boil cabbage in unsalted water until it turns a darker color. Add 2 tbsps butter to tenderize. Cover with lid for 2 min. Thoroughly drain before returning to pan. Chop into small pieces. Next, put ham in large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to boil and simmer for 45 min until tender. Drain. Remove any fat and chop into small pieces. Add cabbage, scallions and ham to mashed potatoes, stirring gently. Serve in individual soup plates. Make indentation on top by swirling a wooden spoon. Put 1 tbsp of butter into each indentation. Sprinkle with parsley.

Important Topics: Domestic & Workplace Violence
The subjects of workplace harrassment or violence and domestic abuse are serious, especially as a home care agency because each home is considered a workplace during an employee shift. GHECS is committed to raising  awareness and prevention of any harrassment or violence at home or in our workplace.

Worker’s Compensation Trust offers these definitions:
- Workplace Violence: behavior in which an employee, former
employee, patient, client, relative or visitor to a workplace inflicts
or threatens to inflict damage to property, serious harm, injury or
death to others at the workplace.
- Threat: the implication or expression of intent to inflict physical
harm or actions that a reasonable person would interpret as a
threat to physical safety or property.
- Intimidation: Making others afraid or fearful through
threatening behavior.
- Domestic Violence: abuse committed against an adult or minor
- Abuse: the intentional reckless attempt to cause bodily injury,
sexual assault, threatening behavior, harassment, stalking or
making annoying phone calls to a person against their will.

The above definitions are guides in Golden Horizons own Harassment & Violence in the Workplace Policy. We have zero tolerance for any threatened, or actual, harassment or violence and we have safeguards and procedures in place to deal with incidents that arise. Golden Horizons is committed to awareness and prevention. Our Violence in the Workplace Committee meets bi-quarterly to address issues, discuss our policies and brainstorm and
execute ways to raise awareness and offer resources.

Caregiving Tip of the Month
In either case, once the client gets up, be sure to make the bed neatly. It promotes cleanliness and readiness for your day together.Whether you are a companion, homemaker or personal care attendant by profession, or you provide care to loved ones who need help, you are a caregiver. We are starting a new section in Golden Nuggets called Caregiving Tip of the Month. Here is this month’s tip: Sometimes clients or loved ones like to sleep in. At other times we might have to help them get out of bed.
