A Message from the Office

Picture
Caring since 1996
Where have the days gone? It cannot be August already, can it? Alas, it can. But fear not! We may be entering the second half of summer, but summer it remains, with  plenty more sun, warm temperatures, barbecues and fun summer evenings.
Speaking of summer evenings, be sure to apply bug repellent. Mosquitos carry a variety of illnesses, including Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus. In Africa, mosquitos can carry Yellow Fever and Malaria. These illnesses can  have serious symptoms, or even prove fatal. Applying bug spray is one way to prevent these illnesses - trying not to get bitten in the first place. Another way is with vaccines, aka immunizations. Some such diseases have vaccines to help prevent contraction or spread. August is National Immunization Awareness Month. Join us as we explore immunizations, and their role in our health. They may just keep us safe.   ~ Golden Horizons Office Team

A Special Thank You!

Over the last few weeks, you may have had your calls to the office answered by someone named Rebecca. At the end of June, our former office team member, Amy R., left us. Rebecca graciously stepped in to help us transition from Amy to a new permanent office team member. Rebecca has been fantastic! She jumped right into the fray, training and learning on the fly. Whatever we needed
her to do, she did with excellence. Rebecca, thank you for your willingness to step in for a couple months, and your help in transitioning us over. You have been a delight and we will miss you in the office. Best of luck in your future!

Welcome!

We would like to say a special welcome to our newest office team member, Zanaya. She comes to us with a great attitude and pleasant personality. We look forward to working with her in the days ahead.

Caregiver of the Month - August 2018

Les W. - Upon joining Golden Horizons in November 2017, Les
quickly proved delightful with his friendly personality and steady, calming demeanor. The office had a feeling he would be an asset, and we were right. Recently we received a call from his client praising his work and thanking us for sending them Les. Thank you for the care and professionalism you show us and your clients.
Congratulations Les!

Word Search: Are You Immune?

August is National Immunization Awareness Month

Small pox, chicken pox, rabies, rubella, typhoid fever, measles, meningitis, tuberculosis - these are a few of many infectious or viral diseases known to humankind. Some can be fatal, others cause severe symptoms. What they all have in common are vaccines. Rapid progress and innovation in science over the last couple centuries have fostered breakthroughs in the development of immunizations, aka vaccines, that provide protection against contracting these, and other, diseases.
One of the most well known breakthroughs in history of vaccinations was made in 1796 by Edward Jenner, British physician and scientist. While studying medicine, Jenner observed that milkmaids who contracted cowpox did not contract small pox. On May 14, 1796, Jenner took pus from a cowpox blister on a milkmaid and gave it as a variolation (word used at the time for
innoculation) 8-year-old James Phipps. He

experienced no symptoms but a single blister.  On July 1, 1796, Jenner again innoculated the boy, this time with small pox pus. The vaccine was successful in prevention; James didn’t get sick. Jenner opened the door for more scientific study and development of vaccines. Nearly 100 years later, on July 6, 1885, after years of study, Louis Pasteur innoculated 9-year-old Joseph Meister. It was successful.

Today, vaccines are widespread in their use to help prevent endemic, epidemic and pandemic outbreaks of diseases world over, help boost our immune systems and their naturally occuring antibodies and antitoxins. New vaccines are always being developed to combat new strains of disease. They are applied most often as shots - single, combination, booster - through syringe. The goal is education, prevention and ultimately eradication. They even have allergy shots. Join us this month as we explore the history and application of immunizations. Stay healthy!
