Research Budget Increase

Alzheimer's
August 29, 2018, from the Alzheimer's Association National Office:

"The U.S. Senate passed a $425 million increase for Alzheimer’s and dementia research funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for fiscal year 2019. As part of our nationwide network of dedicated advocates who have shared stories and personal messages with members of Congress, you helped make this happen. Thank you!

Because of the Alzheimer’s Association and AIM’s leadership to increase NIH funding, scientists are advancing basic disease knowledge, ways to reduce risk, new biomarkers for early diagnosis and drug targeting, and developing the needed treatments to move to clinical testing. And beyond research, Congress continues to work on Alzheimer's policies that will impact millions of Americans living with the disease and their caregivers.

Congress may soon consider the Building our Largest Dementia (BOLD) Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Act. This legislation builds upon recent research advances to strengthen the nation’s public health response to Alzheimer’s by providing state, local, and tribal public health officials with the resources necessary to increase early detection and diagnosis, reduce risk, prevent avoidable hospitalizations, and address health disparities.

Help continue our momentum on Capitol Hill and tell Congress to pass the BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Act!"

Avoiding Car Accidents from Stress Leading to Distracted Driving

Car accident - distracted driving
Highway Fatalities:
37,461 lives were lost on U.S. roads in 2016, an increase of 5.6% from 2015. NHTSA

In 2015, 10% of fatal crashes were distraction affected. The National Safety Council estimates that cell phone use alone accounted for 27% of the car crashes. American Automobile Association studies indicate driver distraction is responsible for more than 58% of teen crashes. Traffic expects classify distraction in 3 main categories:
  1. Manual (hands off the wheel)
  2. Visual (eyes off the road)
  3. Cognitive (wandering mind and stress related)

Will this be your last text?
NHTSA leads the fight nationally against distracted driving by educating Americans about its dangers and partnering law enforcement to help keep it safe out there. The NHTSA has stepped up running campaigns and public service announcements regarding this 'grave' situation. Manual, visual and cognitive distractions are no laughing matter.

One of the highlights comes during April’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month advertising campaign with a law enforcement crackdown called "U Drive. U Text. U Pay." Texting is the most alarming distraction. According to NHTSA sending or reading a text even "LOL" takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. They make a strong point... At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of a football field with ones eyes closed.

Do you know what month it is? It's National Blood Donor Month for sure!

According to the American Red Cross statistics the average blood donation collected is 1 pint. The approximate amount of blood needed for a typical blood transfusion are 3 pints. A single car accident can require as many as 100 pints of blood per victim.
These blood facts and statistics demonstrate the need for an abundance of blood donors, especially for the following fact alone: "Most donated red blood cells must be used within 42 days of collection".

Road Crash Statistics indicate that there are over 2.35 million people each year that are severely injured in a car accident within the United States. The numbers are staggering, especially for seniors and young adults! In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash stats reveal that "the over-65 age group had the highest number of fatalities followed by the 16-to-20 age group among females. In addition, the 46-to-50 age group among males had the greatest increase in fatality rate".
