For Older Adults: Exercise Can Help One Reduce from Falling Down

10/16/2017

exercise for older adults
Regular exercise can help prevent and reduce falls for older adults especially for in-home care loved ones. Many of our aging patients do not exercise regularly because they are afraid of falling. Exercise can aid in their comfort level or well being. In fact it is an important step in helping to prevent falls. Give your seniors the confidence to stay active and continue their balance and strength training, along with other programs designed to keep them active, reduce their risk of falls, and avoid chronic pain. Philips Lifeline has prepared a free copy of Fitness Guide for Older Persons. Go to their website for more details, including information on how to:
  • Encourage your seniors to become more active and to exercise regularly.
  • Learn quick exercises that seniors can easily do from a sitting or standing position.
  • Discover why balance, muscle-strengthening, and aerobic activities can help reduce falls risk in seniors.

breast cancer
Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women. For women it ranks as the 2nd cause of cancer death only after lung cancer. "The diagnosis of breast cancer is confirmed by taking a biopsy of the concerning lump."
"Breast cancer is cancer that develops from breast tissue."

"Breast cancer is cancer that develops from breast tissue. Signs of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in breast shape, dimpling of the skin, fluid coming from the nipple, or a red scaly patch of skin. In those with distant spread of the disease, there may be bone pain, swollen lymph nodes, shortness of breath, or yellow skin." Wikipedia
According to Medical News Today advances in screening and treatment have improved survival rates dramatically since 1989. There are around 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. The chance of any woman dying from breast cancer are 1 in 37, or 2.7 percent. Awareness and the need for screening are important ways in reducing risk.

In the following are some important discussions:
  1. What is breast cancer?
  2. Symptoms
  3. 10 risk factors
  4. Diagnosis
  5. Treatment
  6. Prevention and outlook
Systemic treatments: Drugs used to treat breast cancer are considered "systemic therapies". The drug can reach cancer cells almost anywhere in the body.

Message from the Office

Have you looked outside lately? Do you see all the reds, yellows, oranges and fading greens? Autumn is our season these vibrant colors. But this month, they are not the most important colors. That honor is reserved for pink, the designated color for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held annually in October.

We’ve all been affected by breast cancer, whether diagnosed ourselves, or someone we love. It is never an easy experience to sit across from your doctor and hear those devastating words: “You have cancer.” In that moment, we are faced with a choice: succumb to the negative report, or face it with a fight. Our collective goal with the annual National Breast Cancer Awareness month is for nobody to ever have to face this report again - we want to
eradicate breast cancer from the face of the earth. So lets band together, lets wear our pink ribbons, participate in our events to raise money for researching the cure that will beat breast cancer once and for all! ~ Golden Horizons Office Team
