Research Budget Increase

Alzheimer's
August 29, 2018, from the Alzheimer's Association National Office:

"The U.S. Senate passed a $425 million increase for Alzheimer’s and dementia research funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for fiscal year 2019. As part of our nationwide network of dedicated advocates who have shared stories and personal messages with members of Congress, you helped make this happen. Thank you!

Because of the Alzheimer’s Association and AIM’s leadership to increase NIH funding, scientists are advancing basic disease knowledge, ways to reduce risk, new biomarkers for early diagnosis and drug targeting, and developing the needed treatments to move to clinical testing. And beyond research, Congress continues to work on Alzheimer's policies that will impact millions of Americans living with the disease and their caregivers.

Congress may soon consider the Building our Largest Dementia (BOLD) Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Act. This legislation builds upon recent research advances to strengthen the nation’s public health response to Alzheimer’s by providing state, local, and tribal public health officials with the resources necessary to increase early detection and diagnosis, reduce risk, prevent avoidable hospitalizations, and address health disparities.

Help continue our momentum on Capitol Hill and tell Congress to pass the BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Act!"

Walk to End Alzheimer's - New London

8/24/2018

This morning I gave a 10-minute presentation about something that is currently hitting close to home for people in my family. Alzheimer's Disease.

About a year-and-a-half ago, we received news that a family member was diagnosed with the disease. We have since witnessed and heard about stories and experiences with this relative. He is having anxiety issues. He can't
remember where he is going; he gets lost easily. He is having cognitive and judgment issues in various situations. It is a difficult to see and watch.
Alzheimer's is a serious issue. It is the 6th leading cause of death in America. As of February 9, 2018, the statistic is 500,000 new diagnoses every year. It is a progressive disease caused by the build up of protein in the brain, causing brain cells to die. It is terminal, it takes 5-20 years to cause death. There is no cure.

There is no cure...but there is always hope, one of the greatest assets of the human spirit. No matter how many lives Alzheimer's takes, we will continue to fight for a cure and an end. To that end, consider supporting the Walk to End Alzheimer's - New London. It takes place September 15, 2018, starting at Ocean Beach. Registration starts at 9am, ceremony at 10am, walk at 10:30am. The walk is 2:30pm. All support raised goes to the Alzheimer's Association and their continued efforts to fund and research a cure.

Join River Delta BNI in supporting this cause. You can donate in either of these places:
- River Delta BNI Team @ Alz

- River Delta BNI Team @ FB - (in the team captain's name)

Be the change you want to see in the world. Together we can end the disease once and for all.

National Make-a-Will Month

Are you prepared in the event that the unexpected happens? Do you have life insurance? Do you know who your beneficiaries are? Do you have a DNR or would you want to be resuscitated? Do you have your passwords and other legal
documents organized and in a place someone could find them if necessary? Who will inherit? Do you have a will?

It's important to know the answers to such questions, and to a plan and documents in place to make sure your wishes are executed if ever the worst should happen. August is National Make-a-Will Month. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you get started:

- Consult a professional - Work with a trusted estate planning attorney who can guide you through the process. (*We can recommend one if you need someone in the CT River Valley area).
- Make sure you know who your beneficiaries are on your life insurance, annuities and other accounts, and change them if you want someone else. *ie. If you have been divorced and you haven't changed your beneficiary, your ex-spouse might inherit.
- Make sure you've specified your executors for your estate.
- Take an inventory of your assets - bank accounts, jewelry, personal items, heirlooms, properties, stocks, brokerage accounts, collections etc.
- Make a binder with all important documents and tell whomever you trust to handle your affairs in the event of accidents or tragedies, where to find it.

It's important to make sure we are set. Don't wait!

A Message from the Office

Picture
Caring since 1996
Where have the days gone? It cannot be August already, can it? Alas, it can. But fear not! We may be entering the second half of summer, but summer it remains, with  plenty more sun, warm temperatures, barbecues and fun summer evenings.
Speaking of summer evenings, be sure to apply bug repellent. Mosquitos carry a variety of illnesses, including Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus. In Africa, mosquitos can carry Yellow Fever and Malaria. These illnesses can  have serious symptoms, or even prove fatal. Applying bug spray is one way to prevent these illnesses - trying not to get bitten in the first place. Another way is with vaccines, aka immunizations. Some such diseases have vaccines to help prevent contraction or spread. August is National Immunization Awareness Month. Join us as we explore immunizations, and their role in our health. They may just keep us safe.   ~ Golden Horizons Office Team

A Special Thank You!

Over the last few weeks, you may have had your calls to the office answered by someone named Rebecca. At the end of June, our former office team member, Amy R., left us. Rebecca graciously stepped in to help us transition from Amy to a new permanent office team member. Rebecca has been fantastic! She jumped right into the fray, training and learning on the fly. Whatever we needed
her to do, she did with excellence. Rebecca, thank you for your willingness to step in for a couple months, and your help in transitioning us over. You have been a delight and we will miss you in the office. Best of luck in your future!

Welcome!

We would like to say a special welcome to our newest office team member, Zanaya. She comes to us with a great attitude and pleasant personality. We look forward to working with her in the days ahead.

Caregiver of the Month - August 2018

Les W. - Upon joining Golden Horizons in November 2017, Les
quickly proved delightful with his friendly personality and steady, calming demeanor. The office had a feeling he would be an asset, and we were right. Recently we received a call from his client praising his work and thanking us for sending them Les. Thank you for the care and professionalism you show us and your clients.
Congratulations Les!

History of Immunizations, Part 1

8/3/2018

Rubella. Small pox. Polio. Malaria. These are a few of the diseases that have been eradicated, or are well on their way to being eradicated, thanks to scientific breakthrough of vaccines and immunizations. These breakthroughs have
a fascinating history, rapidly increasing over the course of the 20th century and creating a healthier world than has ever existed before.

August is Nationa Immunization Awareness Month. Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be exploring the history of immunizations, their value to the world, and how we can better spread the word for their safety and effectiveness.

Before we delve further into the jouney, lets understand what immunizations and vaccines are. The US Department of Health and Human Services defines the following:
- Vaccine is made from very small amounts of weak or dead germs that can cause diseases — for example, viruses, bacteria, or toxins. It prepares your body to fight the disease faster and more effectively so you won’t get sick.
- Immunization is the process of becoming immune to (protected against) a disease.

Now that we know what immunizations and vaccines are, we can venture into a taste of history for this edition.
