Lyme Disease  - Not Unique to USA

Lyme disease (Lyme borreliosis) caused by bacteria of the Borrelia type isn't unique to the United States. In North America, Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia mayonii are the cause and is estimated to affect 300,000 people a year. In Europe and Asia, the bacteria Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii are also causes of the infectious disease and have affected 65,000 people. Lyme disease does not appear to be transmissible by certain geological groups of people, or between particular people, or wild animals, or even through food. Diagnosis is based upon a combination of symptoms, history of tick exposure, and possibly testing for specific antibodies in the blood. Unfortunately blood tests are often negative especially in the early stages of concern. Prevention includes wearing long pants and applying "DEET" especially when walking through wetland areas, landscapes with an abundance of tail brush, or playing with pets that have previously run free. Infections are most common from spring to early summer and in damp surroundings.

Sow positivity wherever you go!
This morning, I heard reports regarding an online game known as the Blue Whale Challenge. As I heard the report, I was appalled, disgusted and angry. Someone out there was actually promoting suicide and targeting teens in
particular. The game itself consists of a "curator" sending a series of tasks over the next 50 days, the final task being to commit suicide. That is how you "win". The thing is, nobody wins with this game. Suicide is no game. It is a tragedy. It is often born from a place of deep depression, sadness, negative mental health.

At Golden Horizons, we value life. Our daily mission is to help our seniors remain in their home, maximize their ease and self-sufficiency, and enjoy the independent living they cherish. We want to help them LIVE WELL! One way to help others live well is to participate in the Pink Whale Challenge. The Pink Whale Challenge was started in direct response to the Blue Whale Challenge. Their mission is to counteract the Blue Whale Challenge by spreading daily messages of positivity and appreciation.

- "In order to prove that the internet can be used to viralize the good, the Pink Whale was born." "We believe that everyone has the ability to help others and build the good." - Pink Whale Facebook
- "We believe that everyone has the ability to help others and build the good." - Pink Whale Twitter

This message of spreading positivity, encouraging others and showing your appreciation are powerful tools in combatting depression, low self-esteem, sadness etc. May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. If you know someone who struggles with anxiety, depression, mental health issues, please encourage them to seek help. If you know someone with suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline Toll Free: 1-800-273-8255. You can make the difference in someone's life. You can spread positivity and goodness. You can be a resource to someone who needs help getting help. Please see the resources below as a starting point if necessary.

Honor Thy Mother...

Disclaimer: Golden Horizons Elder Care Services, Inc., does not endorse any particular religion, nor discriminate based upon such.

"Honor thy father and thy mother." Exodus 20:12
In the Judeo-Christian traditions, their sacred scriptures say to "honor thy father and thy mother". We all do not have to be religious to see the wisdom in this prose. Our parents gave us life, raised us, sheltered us, care for us, set our moral compasses, loved us. It is only right that we honor them.
Today is Mother's Day, a day we have the privilege to publically recognize and thank our mothers for all they have done for us. Mothers come in all shapes and sizes. They may be adoptive mothers, biological mothers, a kindly next-door neighbor who we have grown to love as a mother; they are mothers. They selflessly and tirelessly work for their children's well-beings. Our mothers are our chauffeurs, private chefs, our housekeepers, our best friends, our biggest fans and greatest source of comfort. Our mothers are our unsung heroes.

This Mother's Day, take time to thank Mom - hug her, cook her dinner, take her out on the town. Show Mom how much she means to you and how much you appreciate all she does for you.

Message from the GH Office Team

Picture
Here come our May flowers...Finally! It seemed like the cold winter and the recent raw, rainy weather is giving way to warm sun and gentle breezes. Mother Nature has seen fit to send us spring - something to be thankful for.
Speaking of thankfulness...In 1999, Congress designated May as Military Appreciation Month to ensure the opportunity for our nation to publically honor our active military members and our veterans for all their service and sacrifice. Those of us in the GH office come from families with strong ties to our military. We value our men and women in uniform, our veterans and those who have died in defense of our freedoms. Remember to thank them this month. ~ Golden Horizons Office Team

Nameless has a Name!

In April, we introduced you to Nameless, our new GHECS mascot. At that time, Nameless was sad because he was nameless. We are pleased to announce that Nameless is now happy; he has a name! May we present Finnegan. The name Finnegan takes 1st, Rainbow is 2nd,
